“Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” - Dalai Lama

It’s a crazy world we live in. Times have changed and I for one know hardly anyone who still experiences the traditional 9-5 routine. Work takes up so much of our time, and the connectivity of the modern world means that we are all online 24/7 whilst constantly juggling various different areas of our lives.

It just seems like there is never enough time, and everyone is always in a big hurry. Between work, other responsibilities, errands, and other time-consuming tasks it is no wonder that people are stressed out, and never seem to have the time to relax or spend time with the important people in their lives. Someone told me that ‘you should never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life’. Spending every waking minute trying to climb the corporate ladder may help you achieve financial stability, but all the money in the world can not make up for missed time when you get old.

The ramifications of being “always on” are huge, and switching off can feel harder than ever.

However, sometimes you need to be loud, go crazy, and basically have fun.

One on One: Basketball in Suits

For example, the other day I was in the office and decided for no particular reason to burst into my own rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of my voice. There was no reason for it and It was absolutely ridiculous, but by the second verse the rest of my team had joined in. If you ever need a pick-me-up, this is a sure-fire way of achieving this instantly and it’s free. It’s just slightly more awkward if no one else joins in.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that In life it is okay to think “sod it” occasionally. Do you ever see a hill that you want to roll down, despite being a fully-fledged grown up? No problem! Go ahead, it’s fine. (Just watch out for ditches and dog poo.) Are you wearing a suit but want to play basketball with friends? That’s okay. Just Do it (thank you Nike).

So like an ex-girlfriend’s classy neck tattoo advised - Carpe diem. Seize the moment, my friends, and enjoy it. Life is precious, make the most of it.

If you can look and feel dapper while doing so, even better.
